Queenston Stories of Belonging

A Community-Led Documentary

What does it mean to belong?

In the Queenston neighbourhood, that question is being explored through a new short documentary project led by Queenston Neighbours, with Paul Miller (Director) and Mike Enns (Filmmaker).

Queenston Stories of Belonging is a short film that highlights the relationships, places, and everyday moments that help people feel connected in the community.

Listening to What's Already Here

Rather than focusing only on challenges, the project takes an asset-based approach—looking at the strengths already present in Queenston.
From schools and community programs to shared meals, neighbourhood events, and informal gatherings, the film centres the voices of residents who are building connection in meaningful ways.

“This neighbourhood has a long story. What’s often missed are the everyday ways people are creating connection and care for one another. This project is about paying attention to those stories.”
— Paul Miller

“This isn’t about telling people what Queenston needs. It’s about listening well and creating space for people to share where they already experience belonging.”
— Mike Enns

Building on a Shared Story

The documentary builds on earlier storytelling efforts in the neighbourhood, including Queenston: A Working Neighbourhood and the Queenston Stories video series.

This new project continues that work, with a deeper focus on how belonging is formed and sustained through relationships.

A Community of Many Stories

Community members are at the heart of the film, reflecting a wide range of lived experiences.
Stories may include:
  • Families connected to local schools
  • Newcomers building relationships through language and community programs
  • Neighbours gathering around shared meals or events
  • Individuals navigating poverty and systems of support
  • People finding connection through everyday spaces like gardens, parks, and local businesses

Together, these voices offer a more complete and human picture of the neighbourhood—one that reveals how belonging is built in different ways, and why every story matters in shaping a community where people can find their place.

More Than a Film

In addition to interviews, the project includes a community songwriting group, where local musicians are coming together to create original music for the film.

The goal is not only to produce a soundtrack, but to create another space where belonging can be experienced in the process.
